Starter Strings and String Group

Our string groups rehearse on Saturday mornings at Bristol Music Centre West catering for violin, viola, cello and double bass pupils.

For beginners and up to grade 2, it’s the ideal starting point for young players aged 7-11 (Years 3 – 6) wanting to join an adventurous ensemble. Children learn to play in an encouraging and friendly environment where they rehearse and perform together, whilst receiving additional coaching from instrumental specialists. Starter Strings and String Group provide a complete progression route for starter and early stage musicians and act as a precursor to the Bristol Junior String Orchestra.

Starter Strings
This group is suitable for children who have been playing for as little as a term, if they have learnt to use their 1st and 2nd fingers. The music is designed so that there is always an open string with first finger part but the more experienced children can be playing parts that are approaching grade 1 level. There is no audition and we have tutors on hand to help and encourage the less confident players.

String Group
This group follows on from Starter Strings and is suitable for children who have started using a ‘low 2nd finger’ on the violin/viola or 2nd finger on the cello (ask your teacher if you are unsure about this). This is approximately grade 1 level and we have parts that will stretch the players up to grade 2. Again there are no auditions and we have encouraging and supportive tutors.

We’re changing

On Wednesday 23 September 2020 Colston Hall changed its name to Bristol Beacon, and this means we’re changing too.

Bristol Plays Music is run by Bristol Music Trust, the charity that also runs the venue formerly known as Colston Hall. These two organisations will soon unite under one name: Bristol Beacon.

Click below to find out more about how we’re changing, watch our name announcement, and discover how we want everyone to share in the joy of live music.
