Bristol Youth Chamber Orchestra is the middle orchestra in the Bristol Centre for Musicians and is for string players of around grade 5-7 standard. Although predominantly string based, the orchestra does pair up with the Bristol Youth Wind Ensemble to do classical symphonies. The orchestra is directed by experienced violinist Lynne McCabe and highly experienced cellist Carole Fletcher. Lynne directs from the violin, rather than conducts and is ably assisted by experienced string and wind tutors.
The orchestra works on mainstream smaller scale works, predominantly classical, but can have film/musical theatre music arranged. One or two members of the orchestra also get the opportunity to perform a movement of a concerto with the orchestra in the Summer term, which allows the soloist the unique opportunity of performing with the orchestra, and the ensemble learn how to accompany.
BYCO perform 2 concerts a year, one in December and one in the Summer. This year, the orchestra also performed at the Music for Youth regional festival in Swindon, where they played beautifully and comments, such as “A lovely performance – very mature phrasing, very musical……” were received from the Music Mentors.
Members of Chamber Orchestra are encouraged to audition for Bristol Youth Orchestra when they feel ready.

On Wednesday 23 September 2020 Colston Hall changed its name to Bristol Beacon, and this means we’re changing too.
Bristol Plays Music is run by Bristol Music Trust, the charity that also runs the venue formerly known as Colston Hall. These two organisations will soon unite under one name: Bristol Beacon.
