Bristol Music Centre, West

Bristol Plays Music, Stanton Road, Southmead

Our String groups rehearse on Saturday mornings at Bristol Music Centre, West catering for violin, viola, cello and double bass pupils. It’s the ideal starting point for young players wanting to join an adventurous ensemble. Children learn to play in an encouraging and friendly environment where they rehearse and perform together, whilst receiving additional coaching from instrumental specialists. Starter Strings and String Group provide a complete progression route for starter and early stage musicians and act as a precursor to the Bristol Junior Strings Orchestra.

Bristol Wind Band is for young wind, brass and percussion players wanting to start out in ensemble playing.  Wind Band will regularly rehearse and perform joint pieces with Bristol Junior String Orchestra to give children a full orchestral experience. Young musicians from both BJSO & Wind Band will usually progress on to Bristol Bridge Orchestra.

Ensembles on a Monday

The Bristol Youth Jazz Orchestra has a fantastic reputation for producing young jazz musicians. Working from a beginner level, it’s a jazz band for instrumentalists rehearsing and performing a wide range of repertoire.

It’s a friendly group for beginner and intermediate players to begin playing Jazz, improvising and composing as a group.

The sessions are led by Jazz specialist, Julian Tucker.

The repertoire covered in the sessions ranges from familiar standards to more unusual styles and new arrangements. The group gives opportunities to improve sight-reading, playing by ear, ensemble skills and improvising, where students can try out new things in a relaxed and encouraging environment with informal band performances and sharing events throughout the year.

In addition our Flute Group is a small, friendly, un-auditioned group of enthusiastic flautists working at Grade 3+ who meet on Mondays at 6-7.15pm to play a wide range of repertoire from classical and jazz to stage and screen.

Ensemble playing in a variety of genres is hugely beneficial to progress in instrumental and general musicianship skill.  Our tutors strongly encourage their students to become involved with group music-making activities whenever possible.

Flute Group is a welcoming and inclusive environment in which members can enhance their flute playing abilities as part of a group, strengthening their performance skills whilst reinforcing, and putting into practice, techniques learnt in their one-to-one lessons.

Players will develop their aural skills alongside their fluency and accuracy in sight reading.  Players will be able to progress in their own playing whilst focusing on listening, balancing and blending with other musicians.

We’re changing

On Wednesday 23 September 2020 Colston Hall changed its name to Bristol Beacon, and this means we’re changing too.

Bristol Plays Music is run by Bristol Music Trust, the charity that also runs the venue formerly known as Colston Hall. These two organisations will soon unite under one name: Bristol Beacon.

Click below to find out more about how we’re changing, watch our name announcement, and discover how we want everyone to share in the joy of live music.
